George Floyd's Family Meets with President Biden

One-Year Anniversary of George Floyd's Death

Family Members Speak Out After White House Meeting

On May 25, 2021, the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's death, family members of the late Black man killed by police in Minneapolis met with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House. The private meeting was followed by a press conference where family members spoke about their ongoing fight for justice.

"We are still heartbroken and grieving," said Floyd's sister, Bridgett Floyd. "But we are also determined to make sure that his death was not in vain."

Other family members spoke about the progress that has been made in the past year, including the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. However, they also emphasized that there is still much work to be done to address systemic racism in the United States.

"We need to make sure that every Black person in this country is treated with dignity and respect," said Floyd's brother, Philonise Floyd. "We need to make sure that our children are safe and that our communities are free from violence."

In a statement released after the meeting, President Biden said that he was "deeply moved" by the family's stories and that he is committed to working with them to address police brutality and systemic racism.

"The death of George Floyd was a tragedy that shook our nation," said Biden. "We must never forget his name or the pain that his family has endured. We must work together to build a more just and equitable society for all."
