Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He has a long history of public service, beginning with his election to the New Castle County Council in 1970. In 1972, he was elected to the United States Senate, where he served for 36 years.

Leadership in the Senate

As a Senator from Delaware, Biden established himself as a leader in facing some of our nation's most important challenges. He played a key role in passing important legislation, including the Violence Against Women Act and the Affordable Care Act. He also served as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee for six years.
