Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He has a long history of public service, beginning with his election to the New Castle County Council in 1970. In 1972, he was elected to the United States Senate, where he served for 36 years.

As a Senator from Delaware, Biden established himself as a leader in facing some of our nation's most important challenges.
